A summer night routine that is healthy and relaxing for better sleep. Healthy habits that will set you up for a productive next day.
What is a Night Routine?
A night routine consists of a list of things you want to get done before ending your day. The list can include healthy habits, productive tasks, or things you have to get done. A night routine can help you sleep better at night and set you up for a productive next day. Here are 10 ideas for a summer night routine to build your own nighttime ritual for better sleep.
Summer Night Routine
1. Turn Off Overhead Lights
Overhead lighting is not the vibe at night. Turn them off and then turn on your small lamps. You’ll instantly feel relaxed and your brain will go into “nighttime mode” if you do this every single night. Turning the bright lights off and the small lamps on will eventually become a trigger that your nighttime ritual has started.
Tip: Switch your bright white lightbulbs to soft or warm white for a relaxing, cozy atmosphere.
2. Stop Eating Four Hours Before Bed Time
As much as I love a good nighttime snack, it’s best to stop eating four hours before bedtime for better digestion and sleep. It’s also best to have a lighter dinner to feel more energized the next morning. Avoid too much junk food at night because you’re more likely to get nightmares.
3. Closing Shift
Everyone should have a closing shift before heading to bed. A closing shift involves cleaning and organizing your environment before bed. It’s so you can wake up to a clean kitchen, clean dishes, and peace of mind. Start by cleaning the dishes, wiping down the counters, closing the blinds, making sure everything is locked up, etc. Think of this as a tidy-up to add to your summer night routine, not a deep clean.
4. Journal About Gratitude
Practicing gratitude increases positivity, relieves stress and anxiety, and can improve your sleep over time. I mentioned the 5-minute journal in my summer morning routine and it has two sections for day and night. The night section has a space for highlights and reflection if you want to journal about those topics instead!
5. Self-care & Skincare
Flossing, brushing your teeth, and showering can seem like a chore but practicing self-care will improve your mental and physical health in the long run. Taking care of yourself isn’t selfish, we all need some downtime. Sit down and take some time to put on an LED mask and watch your favorite show while doing it. A cool bath would be great to add to your summer night routine if you can!
6. Set Phone to Night Shift
Two hours before getting into bed, set your phone to night shift. Night Shift on an iPhone is a feature that adjusts the display’s colors to warmer tones, which can make the screen easier on the eyes and help prevent sleep disruption by reducing blue light. Be sure to check your phone to see if it has this feature!
7. Make A Sleepy Tea
A sleepy tea is a tea that promotes relaxation to help you fall asleep faster. This tea from Wise Ape Tea is made with Organic Chamomile, Organic Valerian Root, and Organic Skullcap to improve sleep quality and reduce stress and anxiety without the heavy drowsy effect that other sleep supplements produce.

8. Wear Comfortable Pajamas
Wearing comfortable, breathable pajamas can help you sleep better at night because you don’t have to deal with scratchy or tight fabrics. A loose, soft tank top and shorts are my go-to for the Summer. I sleep fully through the night when I’m comfortable and cozy.
9. No TV An Hour Before Bedtime
The TV can give off a lot of light when you’re trying to fall asleep so it’s best to turn it off an hour before bedtime. Another reason to turn the TV off is that you might end up watching more than you thought, which could lead to you sleeping less. Adding this to your summer night routine might actually change your life like it did mine!
10. Put Your Phone on “Do Not Disturb”
Another disrupter of sleep is our phones. Texts, calls, and notifications should be put on silent while you sleep so it doesn’t wake you up in the middle of the night. I understand emergencies happen, so keep your close circle as the only ones who can call.
