How to Beat the Post-Summer Slump
Feeling low in energy, unmotivated, or off-routine after summer ends? Here are five ways to get out of a post-Summer slump. You are not alone when it comes to feeling like you’re in a slump after Summer ends. A lot of people feel this dip as schedules shift, days get shorter, or routines change. Today, we are going to talk about practical tips for energy, mindset, and routine.

1. Reset Your Routine

If you’ve fallen off your routine or simply have been more lenient with your routine, then now is the time to get back on track.
- Set a consistent sleep/wake schedule to ensure you get a great night’s sleep. Going to bed and waking up at the same time every day, even on weekends, helps regulate your internal clock and reduces waking up at night.
- Plan out weekly meals and workouts to save time during the week. Planning ahead of time helps with “decision fatigue”. Decision fatigue is “the idea that after making many decisions, your ability to make more decisions over the course of a day becomes worse”.
- Use Sundays as your Reset Routine day. It’s a day to meal prep, plan outfits, set goals, and clean your space. You can read more about a Reset Routine here.
2. Focus on Movement

Movement is a great way to fight fatigue and boost mood. Focus on exercises you love, like walking, hiking, or cozy cardio.
- Incorporate outdoor walks while the weather is crisp. Now is the perfect time for a midday walk because the weather is finally cooling down.
- Try fun new workout classes or YouTube workout videos. When I find my workout routine is boring, I just switch it up or find a new workout video on YouTube. This creator is my favorite for helping me get my steps in. Tip: Mute the video and play your own music.
- Consistency over intensity. Instead of worrying about how intense a workout is or how many calories you burned, focus on staying consistent.
3. Stay Healthy with Seasonal Foods

Keep up the habit of eating healthy foods during the colder months. Eating in tune with the season can give you energy while still being comforting.
- Swap summer salads for warm bowls with vegetables, grains, and spices. I love meal prepping a big bowl of turkey chili for the week, and I love this recipe from Hello Fresh.
- Stay hydrated with teas and broths. Bone broth is high in protein and other nutrients. It helps with digestive health, builds muscle and bones, and plays a role in weight management.
- Reduce sugar/processed snacks that add to sluggishness. I love making my own desserts because I can control the ingredients and sugar amount. There’s a ton of high-protein/low-sugar recipes on TikTok.
4. Make Space for Self-Care

I understand the shorter days can affect your mood, but use it as an opportunity to get cozy a little earlier.
- Journaling or meditation helps you stay grounded. Both can help you manage stress, reduce negative feelings, and focus on being present.
- Treat yourself to small cozy rituals like candles, skincare, or taking a warm bath.
- Try a light therapy lamp if the dark still affects your mood. A light therapy lamp mimics outdoor light. It’s made to lift your mood and ease symptoms of fatigue.
5. Set Fresh Goals for Fall

Nothing gets me more motivated than having something to look forward to.
- Create a mini fall bucket list. Try a new recipe, visit a pumpkin patch, or rewatch the Vampire Diaries. I created this Fall bucket list a few years ago, but there are plenty on Pinterest!
- Make new career, fitness, and lifestyle goals for the season. I’m big on creating seasonal/quarterly goals over yearly goals because I feel it’s more attainable.
- Focus on progress, not perfection. I created this 30-day challenge Notion Template because consistently completing small tasks creates long-lasting habits.
Overall, to beat the post-Summer slump, you have to focus on your routines, movement, nourishment, self-care, and setting goals. Fall is a season of renewal rather than a slowdown. Take this season to focus on yourself and your well-being.
