If you’re anything like me, you probably shave every week, or sometimes even multiple times a week. I’ve been shaving since I was a teenager, so that’s over 15 years of shaving! I’ve gotten so used to it being part of my routine, but what if there was an at-home device that could help you shave less, reduce razor bumps, and save you from spending hundreds of dollars on professional laser hair removal?

I’ve been personally testing the Tria 4X to see what kind of difference it could make to my routine, and I’ll be sharing my honest experience throughout this post. I’ll also walk you through how to use it, what I’ve noticed so far, and how at-home laser compares to IPL and professional laser hair removal.

What Is the Tria 4X Hair Removal Laser (2nd Gen)?

Best at-home laser hair removal

The Tria 4X Hair Removal Laser is the only FDA-cleared at-home laser hair removal device that provides permanent hair reduction. It has been shown to achieve up to 100% hair reduction in just 8 treatments, which can mean less shaving, fewer ingrown hairs, and less razor irritation.

It uses a precise “hair targeting” wavelength of 810nm, the same wavelength commonly used in professional laser hair removal. The laser targets the hair follicle at the root, helping to permanently disable it with repeated treatments. The Tria 4X has up to 233% more power than leading IPL devices. It’s priced at $599.99 as a one-time purchase, so there are no ongoing treatment costs once you own the device.

The Tria 4X can be used on several areas of the body, including:

  • Legs
  • Arms
  • Bikini line
  • Underarms
  • Feet
  • Hands
  • Chest
  • Back
  • Stomach
  • Women’s facial hair (cheek line downward)

It is not recommended for men or people with very coarse facial hair to use the device on their face. It can only be used from the cheek line downward (i.e., upper lip, chin, and sideburn areas) and should not be used on eyebrows.

Is Laser Hair Removal Right For You?

The Tria 4X works on naturally light brown to black hair. Lighter hair colors such as white, blonde, red, or gray won’t absorb enough of the laser’s energy to disable the hair follicle. The device has a built-in Skin Tone Sensor, which ensures your skin tone can safely tolerate laser hair removal. Make sure you’re suitable by checking the chart below:

How Does the Tria 4X Work?

Laser hair removal works by targeting the melanin (pigment) in your hair with a concentrated beam of light. The laser’s light energy then converts to heat, which travels down the hair into the hair follicle. This heat disables the follicle, causing the hair to fall out.

With continued treatments, the follicles stop producing new hair, giving you long-term permanent hair reduction. Other at-home hair removal devices use IPL (intense pulsed light), which emits a broad spectrum of light, giving you semi-permanent results.

The Tria 4X is designed to bring professional-style laser technology into your home. While clinics typically use 25+J/cm² of power, the Tria 4X uses up to 20J/cm². This gives you the closest in-clinic results available at home, with up to 233% more power than market-leading IPL devices from brands such as Braun and Philips. More power means more precision and more hair removed.

My Experience Using the Tria 4X

The Tria 4X Hair Removal Laser is “locked” when you first turn it on for safety reasons. To unlock it, you press the pink button at the top to turn it on, then place the Skin Sensor (located at the bottom of the device) against the area of skin you want to treat. If your skin tone is safe to treat, the device will unlock, and you can start your treatment. If your skin is not safe to treat, the device will remain locked. I love this feature because it ensures you’re suitable for laser hair removal and that it’s safe for you to use!

I decided to start by treating my lower legs, from just below the knee to the ankle, to try it out first. The Tria 4X has five power settings, with 5 being the most powerful and most effective. It’s simple and easy to use. All you need to do is shave the area you want to treat, unlock the device with the Skin Sensor, select your treatment level 1-5, then start treating the area you want.

Each lower leg took around 10 minutes, so treating both legs took about 20 minutes in total.

For the first two treatments, I used level 5, and the pain level was a 5 out of 10. Some users described the sensation as if a small rubber band was snapping on the skin. Others say it feels like a warm, prickling sensation. To me, it felt like both. Most of the time, it just feels warm, and sometimes you’ll feel that rubber band sensation, but the pain only lasts 1/2 a second.

Level 5 might take time to tolerate, so I suggest starting at a lower setting. Not only will it help you tolerate the sensation, but also after each treatment you’ll have less hair to treat, which could mean less pain.

For my third treatment, I used Level 3, and the pain level was a 2 out of 10. It felt very mild, but slightly warm throughout the treatment. I would suggest starting at this level!

Tria Laser also offers a Phytograph Hydrating Calm Soothing Gel that helps reduce the sensation of laser treatments so you can tolerate higher treatment levels.

How to Use the Tria 4X

Step 1: Prepare the Skin

  • Shave 24 to 48 hours before treatment.
  • Apply Phytograph Gel if needed.

Step 2: Choose Your Setting

  • Unlock the device against your skin: Place the Skin Sensor located on the base of the device against the area you want to treat. If your skin is compatible, the device will beep and unlock. If not, the device will remain locked.
  • Select your treatment level from 1-5 by single pressing the power button.

Step 3: Treat the Area

  • Hold the treatment window against your skin until you hear two beeps. If the device beeps and then buzzes, repeat the pulse.

Step 4: Soothe

  • Reapply Phytograph Gel for a boost of moisture.
  • Repeat this process once every 2 weeks.

My Tria 4X Results

I’ve used the Tria 4X for 3 treatments so far, and I’ve already noticed less hair, with some spots having no hair at all! The pain is tolerable, but I like to take a break between legs to let the device cool down for a bit. I found that this helped with the rubber band-like sensations during the treatment.

Overall, I’ve noticed not only less hair, but also finer hairs, which makes it look like I have even less hair overall. Here are the results on my legs, with both photos showing hair growth one week after shaving:
